I would say that I am an artist when I do design, and a designer when I do art.

Let’s not overcomplicate things for once and let’s go with the former. I think I tie being an artist with my personality more. But I do design now, and I’ve been doing design for some time now. I’m not a great or revolutionary designer by any means, but I am good enough for some people to want me to design their stuff.

Right now, I’m trying to think about my design philosophy.

I really want to say that basically, I am a designer mostly to help others. I hate how self-righteous it sounds. I do want to help others, sometimes. But sometimes I don’t. I often complicate things too much to be solving them with design. I suck at following trends and rules and I sometimes think that design is just dumb (I think that everything is dumb, at some point, so no biggie). But I’ve never questioned that design can make things more accessible. That’s what I’m paying attention to right now. I wish I would be more innovative with my design (don’t we all), but let’s not be hard on ourselves here. So I guess it goes back to helping other people — You want to give your girlfriend a pillow with a personalised design? You want to create a crossword puzzle for your grandma? An invitation for your party? On it!

Did I just describe the job of a freelance designer? I’m not sure how I feel about that, since I don’t want to go freelance.

The important thing is, I see design as a service I can offer and which I genuinely like to do — but at the same time, it’s not something I would dedicate my whole life to. That sounds really pragmatic, wow.
