<aside> 💡 sick of marketing, let’s come back to drawing — drawing classes with Korman and watching animation youtube creators (started watching anime again, what a coincidence)

I haven’t drawn in a while. In my free time, at least. That was until we started having drawing classes at VSKK. Our teacher reminded me a lot of my first art teacher, who got me into art. They are not the same but has a really similar attitude. Of course, you could say that it’s just how artists are — but that’s not important. Besides drawing in class, he wanted us to start bringing our own sketchbooks and draw things we like. Not many of us really did that, but I took that really seriously and found myself really enjoying drawing again. Drawing really is like a meditation for me, and I am not exaggerating. It also helped that gradually, I became really uninterested in all that corporate stuff, marketing, branding, etc.

During our classes, the teacher showed us a few creators on youtube, who could help us with anatomy. And there’s nothing I love more than watching random tutorials on youtube. I started to look up some other creators and came across this guy ⬇

Ethan has the most engaging content I’ve seen for the longest time. It ✨charmed✨ me. I started watching his videos to improve my drawing skills, but then I found myself becoming really invested in animation. Since then, I started thinking about animation a lot and sometimes trying to incorporate it into my hw for uni or just animate something small in my free time. I continued watching Ethan quite regularly, but I also kept discovering other creators and other forms of digital art. And I like the most unconventional the most — like this person who was drawing on the phone, or other guy drawing in MS Paint.

I never really liked doing digital art, since I was drawing by hand for so long — the media is really different and I never liked what I created in digital format. At the time, graphic design seemed like a never-ending problem solving for me and I was kind of burned out. I wanted to just create things. So I gave it a shot and started experimenting with digital art — drawing in photoshop, pixel art, 3D modelling.

I am so grateful for our drawing lessons, which started all of this mess. For a brief moment, I thought I would drop out and apply to some illustration school instead. After some thinking though, I don’t think I want to work in the illustration or animation industry. At least not now. I am very happy that I picked it up again and knowing me — rushing into things and then losing interest really quickly, I want to keep it as my hobby as long as I can (I think hobbies are very important). Or until I change my mind. Either way, there’s always a way to sneak a little bit of illustration into designs I do, so I can take it easy.

update: I also remembered that the first thing I animated was the main course project in our first year at uni — our team decided to capture the history of dance and so we were animating different dance styles. I remember really liking the process and then seeing the outcome — it was really rewarding.
